Strengthen Love. How Do You Maintain The Romance?

Having a child can take up much of your attention and effort. But it’s important for you and your partner to make time for each other too. Here are five steps you can take with your spouse to keep the romance sizzling!

1. Make a date and stick to it.

Your schedule is catered to your children's needs. This means quality time with your spouse is sacrificed. Instil a habit of setting a date and sticking to it. Even if it’s just supper at home, make it a point to put in some effort – light up some candles or take turns making meals for each other. This will show your spouse that no matter how busy both of you are, you are still each other’s priority.

2. Take advantage of little moments

Nap time offers a moment for you and your spouse to connect. Putting your child to sleep allows you to work together as a unit as well as create opportunities for communication with each other. But it’s best to avoid busy or high traffic areas.

3. Don’t wait for a reason to show affection

When you’re busy raising a child, things like unnecessary texting becomes a thing of the past. Most of your texts to your spouse now consists of grocery lists and updates about the child. So, every so often, take a minute just to say “hi”, write little love notes for them to find or experiment with doing something loving for your partner once a week. These little acts don’t take much time or effort, but the outcome will be a stronger relationship.

4. Give your partner the day off.

Does your spouse look tired of worn out? Why not take over some of the responsibilities for the night and offer to give them a foot rub while they watch their favourite TV show. Everyone needs a break, so they can perform at their best, and this way let’s your partner know that they aren’t alone and they can
rely on you when they need a little rest.

5. Block five minutes out of everyday – just to connect.

It can be difficult to keep track of what’s going on in your partner’s life outside the home, after your child is here. Your topics of conversation revolve around your child. Take five minutes out of your day to focus on your partner. Find out how their day was, how things are at work. All topics should be focused on each other. This won’t just help strengthen your relationship but is also a great
way to practice empathy. Maintaining a relationship, at any stage, requires work. But always remember that you are not in this alone. Try these methods as ways to remind each other of that.
